Course Overview

Public Health Informatics is the systematic application of information and computer science and technology to public health practice. Public health has always been about disease surveillance and management, particularly the identification of major disease outbreaks. This course examines technology and systems applications in support of Public Health Informatics, identifies resources available to assist in disaster management, examines key issues with respect to information technology for populations and healthcare providers, and discusses implications of Public Health Informatics to improve patient and population outcomes. This course also discusses Telehealth as it has the unique capability of achieving health equity by crossing temporal, social, and geographical barriers to healthcare.

Course Objectives

The course will enable participants to:

  • Define Public Health Informatics.
  • Examine the need for technology and systems applications in support of Public Health Informatics.
  • Examine key issues with respect to information technology for populations and healthcare providers.
  • Discuss the implications of Public Health Informatics to improve patient and population outcomes.
  • Identify technology and systems applications in telehealth and discuss issues pertaining to the practice of telehealth.

Other Information

This course is eligible for Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP). NTUC members can enjoy up to 50% funding (capped at $250 per year) under UTAP. NTUC members aged 40 and above can enjoy higher funding support up to $500 per individual each year, capped at 50% of unfunded course fees, for courses attended between 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2025.
