Mr Tommy Hor
Mr Tommy Hor is a seasoned executive with diverse experience in IT. He graduated with a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Hong Kong in 1985. He had served the National University of Singapore community as the Director of IT and Chief IT Officer for 18 years before stepping down in 2020 to pursue his own professional interests. Throughout his career in NUS, Tommy had led the organic growth of IT for teaching & learning, cutting-edge research and university administrations. He had played a vital role in digital transformation and business innovations in supporting the faculty, staff and students. His expertise in enterprise architecture, high-speed networking, virtualization, Cloud computing, cybersecurity, identity management and data analytics have enabled him to be an effective coach for staff development and troubleshooting in mission critical operations.
For the professionals, Tommy sees strong connection between his past work and teaching. He believes that teaching shall go beyond content delivery or learning facts from the textbooks and classes. The learning environment should foster critical thinking and problem-solving skill as an individual or a team that he had experienced in many real-life scenarios. He sees himself and his work in classes equipping the students with the practical skills as the last mile connector or right on the spot to the current IT workforce. At the executive level, classes shall focus on the high-level understanding of technology, its risks, limitations, options available and priorities. The future leaders need to be digitally fluent and be able to critique a digital proposal and make consequential investment decisions. Tommy’s professional interests are IT governance, leadership development, infrastructure, virtualization, cybersecurity and machine learning.
