Course Overview
A product is only as good – and profitable – as the problem it solves. In the post-pandemic digital world, a human-centred approach is the silver bullet that transforms a design into a market-leading solution.
The UX Design online short course from the National University of Singapore (NUS) Advanced Computing for Executives (ACE) delves into the fundamental principles of user-centred design. Over six weeks, you’ll explore common design constraints and learn to place the consumer at the front-and-centre of your design decisions. Guided by experts, you’ll break down the six usability goals and the importance of iteration as a core part of the design process. Put theory into practice by designing a solution to a real-life UX challenge using Figma, and produce a minimum viable product.
Course Objectives
This course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to:
- Discuss the foundational concepts of UX design and design as a means to achieving goals within constraints.
- Evaluate and improve design as part of an iterative loop.
- Incorporate empathetic design principles into the design process.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the concepts of UX design, including common design constraints and how to meet design goals
- Leverage Figma to create wireframes that address identified UX challenges
- Analyse and critique UX designs, paying close attention to the iterative design loop and its importance in usability
- Identify different user personas and their needs as a core consideration when designing and producing a minimum viable product

Dr Lu Weiquan
Dr Lu Weiquan is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computing in NUS who examines the User Experience (UX) Design of technologically-empowered learning environments. He designs and utilizes experiential learning technology (such as simulations, Augmented and Virtual Reality) in the courses he teaches, and his education research interests include figuring out how all this technology tangibly and measurably affects human learning using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. He also advises the government in the fields of UX design and experiential learning, and he develops Metaverse applications for industry clients. He holds a B.Comp. in Computing and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from NUS.
Weiquan specialises in examining the user experience (UX) design of technologically empowered learning environments. He designs and utilises experiential learning technology (such as simulations, augmented and virtual reality) in the courses he teaches. His research interests include figuring out how all this technology tangibly and measurably affects human learning using machine learning and artificial intelligence. Besides his academic pursuits, Weiquan works closely with the aviation industry to develop next-generation pilot training systems. He has also successfully developed and deployed metaverse applications for clients across a diverse range of industries, and has advised the government on relevant fields. Weiquan holds a bachelor’s degree in computing and a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the National University of Singapore.
