Course Overview
This module aims to provide a broad introduction to computer networks. It covers the main concepts, the fundamental principles, and the high-level workings of important protocols in each of the Internet protocol layer. Topics include the Web and Web applications, DNS services, reliable protocols, transport and network layer protocols, secure communication, LAN, and data communication.
This course is part of Professional Certificate in Operating System and Networking.
Course Objectives
This course will equip learners with the following skills and knowledge:
- Introduction to Computer Networking
- Application Layer: HTTP and DNS
- Transport Layer: Reliable Protocol Design, TCP, UDP
- Network Layer: DHCP, IP, ARP, Routing
- Link Layer: Multiple Access Protocols, Ethernet, Multiplexing, Switching
- Physical Layer: Signalling, Modulation

Assoc Prof Soo Yuen Jien

Assoc Prof Soo Yuen Jien
Assoc Prof Soo Yuen Jien has been in NUS for more than 20 years. He received the B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D degree from NUS in year 2000, 2001 and 2006 respectively.
Starting off as a teaching assistant in year 2000, he has since enjoyed teaching for 10 plus years. Yuen Jien is now an Associate Professor in Computer Science Department of School of Computing.
